☕️ Homeschool Lessons Before Your Coffee Gets Cold [Tutors, Gifts + More..]

Sharing a couple things that help me homeschool before my coffee gets cold…

The first piece of humble advice is bittersweet:

Once your child can read and write, you don’t need to teach every lesson anymore. (Yay for independence! But also – 😢 – where did the time go? Our little ones are growing up!)

Each morning, we gather for our beloved morning circle. It's a time for connection and setting the tone for the day. But once that's complete, our oldest shifts to working independently on most of his lessons.

I still CHECK their work and they still come to me after an individual lesson or reading so they can narrate and discuss. Or, our oldest will complete his written narration and bring it to me.

Our youngest, however, still needs my guidance with subjects like math, spelling, Plutarch, science, and history. And that's perfectly okay!

This isn’t to say that once a child can read and write, they're left to fend for themselves. On the contrary, it’s a natural step toward independence that they will need as they grow into adulthood.

By offering them the opportunity to take ownership of their learning, we are fostering a sense of personal motivation that will carry them far.

If we hover over their every lesson, we risk undermining their confidence and the joy of self-discovery that learning can bring.

It’s not our job as parents to deliver every lesson.

It’s our child’s role to take the gift of learning and make it their own.

Secondly, we’ve relied on various tutors once a week for our oldest, mainly because I wanted him to dive deeper with intelligent individuals who share his love for math.

But I’ve always had one caveat: I never leave our home for the sake of an amazing tutor (I’m a homebody and we limit our screen usage for limited online classes).

Tutors ALWAYS come to our home.

So I partnered with Grade Potential in hopes they can provide you with the same in-home tutoring opportunity.
