Simple Studies: Poetry + Color
A Charlotte Mason Instructor’s Guide for Pre-K through 6th grade students.

This special guide explores the beauty and emotions associated with different colors through a series of imaginative and evocative poems. Each poem is dedicated to a particular color, delving into how that color feels, looks, and the images and feelings it evokes.

While our corresponding book Hailstones and Halibut Bones does not explicitly discuss religious themes, this Simple Studies guide, inspired by the Charlotte Mason method, celebrates the creativity and beauty of God's creation through the lens of color.

In this study we cover narration, dictation, writing, literature, biblical history, color theory, scripture, character development, nature journaling and art among other areas of schooling all while you simply read aloud. Our goal with this study is not to have children to always offer the right answer. Rather, our aim is to encourage our children to form personal relations with poetry, color, nature and scripture.

This is not a poetry comprehension guide –– it’s a deep dive into our children’s hearts and minds, and a resource to help us teach them timeless truths.

All students are prompted to use their Bible and to create original, colorful nature drawings in their nature journals.

Included in this study:

– 12 Simple Lessons that correspond with each short poem

– Real-Life “Colors in Nature” Images for Nature Journaling Guidance

– 24 Hand-drawn Coloring Pages for younger students to use while you read aloud

– Lessons separated by Pre-K – K, 1st – 3rd and 4th – 6th Grades

– “Color” Picture Booklists for each lesson

Noah’s Ark Picture Booklist

– Larger General “Colors” Picture Booklist

Christian Picture Booklist featuring the Rainbow

– Chapter Review and Narration prompts

– Bible Verse Dictation Sentences for Older Students

– Copywork Guidance

– Review Questions and more…

Instructors will need one additional item on hand to complete the lessons:

1)
Hailstones and Halibut Bones by Mary O’Neill
(Be sure to check your local library! There are also free read-aloud videos of this short book, and the ability to borrow this title for free on the Internet if you are unable to purchase your own copy).

"Poetry is the breath and finer spirit of all knowledge; it is the impassioned expression which is in the countenance of all Science." – Charlotte Mason
